How Popular Is Solar? Numbers Show an Energy Revolution
You are reading this because you are likely a conscientious, responsible citizen. I want you to know that your interest in solar means you are becoming part of a real energy revolution in how we live.
I know these are bold words, but...
Let's Look at Some Numbers
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration website, as of 2018:
20% of electricity generation in the U.S. is from renewables
2% of electricity generated in the U.S. is from solar
It is estimated that one megawatt of electricity can power about 200 homes. This means one gigawatt (a thousand megawatts) can power an estimated 200,00 homes.
In the first quarter of 2019, 2.7 gigawatts of solar photovoltaics were installed nationwide. By the end of last year, enough solar was installed to power 12.7 million homes.
In Colorado
Colorado is at the forefront of this revolution. In the first quarter of 2019, we added 30 megawatts of solar power, making us 12th in the nation in solar projects.
Residential solar is a huge chunk of this net output. In the third quarter of 2019, residential solar installations hit a record 700 megawatts of power produced. This equates to taking 140,000 households out of dirty fuel's grip in just three months.
As of 2020, the total photovoltaic output is at 45.5 gigawatts. While much of this output is commercial, to put this number in perspective, it is enough wattage to power 9 million homes. A bonafide revolution, I'd say.
